Tilt and Turn Windows

  • Can’t decide which windows you’d like to fit? Tilt and turn windows might just suit you.

These new-model, ergonomic windows allow you to welcome the outdoors in — even in wet West Country weather.

Tilt and turn windows’ flagship feature is that they open in two different ways. First, they can “tilt” open – usually, this means gently pushing the bottom of the window away from the frame. This ventilates your home without admitting raindrops. Of course, we can manufacture and fit your windows to tilt open at the top, which might suit better for basements, while not quite offering the same protection against the rain.

However, tilt and turn windows are also hinged at the sides, meaning they can be opened in like a door. This mechanism can give you massively increased ventilation, with the option of angling the window sail-style to direct a breeze into your home. Friction hinges protect against sudden gusts of wind. Our modern materials make the window easy to clean and maintain, making tilt and turn windows one of our most sought-after window choices.

Do remember that the option for windows to open inwards is seldom suitable for homes where there are curtains or obstacles.

Are tilt and turn windows secure?

Some worry that tilt and turn windows are less secure thanks to their dual opening and locking mechanisms, but there’s no need to worry! Our range of tilt and turns are engineered to be just as sturdy and secure as any of our other types of window, with each locking system manufactured and fitted to the high standards set by the Home Office. We want you to feel safe in your home, so once we’ve installed your tilt and turn windows, we’ll demonstrate how to use and secure them properly for your (and our!) peace of mind.

How do you use tilt and turn windows?

You open tilt and turn windows in two different ways depending on how much you’d like to ventilate your home. By tilting the window open you’ll admit a small stream of air into the room, without creating a security concern or risking a soggy carpet in case of rain — the mechanism only leaves a narrow gap and the angled window directs rain away from the frame, even on windy days!

Then, for hot summer days, turn the window on its side hinge (it opens inwards like a door) and enjoy the fresh air. If you fit two tilt and turn windows, you can direct a cooling stream of flowing fresh air through your home!

Do tilt and turn windows open inwards or outwards?

Tilt and turn windows open both inwards and outwards in different ways. The window “tilts” open outwards, which gives a small amount of ventilation while providing enhanced security and protection from the elements. Then, should you want more ventilation, you can “turn” the window to open inwards on its side hinge, like a door. Aside from their pleasing ergonomic function, the two available opening mechanisms allow you to exercise a fair bit of control over how you ventilate your home.

How big can my tilt and turn windows be?

A tilt and turn window can be as large or as small as you want it to be! At Launa we manufacture all our tilt and turn windows at our affiliated state-of-the-art factory in Clevedon. Whether you’re looking for a small bathroom window or a floor to ceiling centrepiece, we’ll go the extra mile to make sure they’re just right.

However — if you’re looking to fit large, floor-to-ceiling windows on the ground floor, you might do better to explore installing patio doors or French doors.

How do tilt and turn windows work?

A tilt and turn window opens in two different directions, vertically and horizontally, with one hinge at the top of the frame (or bottom, depending on your preference) that lets the window “tilt” outwards a small amount and another hinge on the side.

This side hinge allows the window to swing inwards like a door, and can be locked as far open or closed as you prefer. The idea behind this design is to give you two opening mechanisms for the price of one.

What are the advantages of tilt and turn windows?

Tilt and turn windows are increasingly popular because they give you an unprecedented level of control over how much you ventilate your home, as well as having a particular ergonomic charm. It’s this combination that makes them the window of choice all over mainland Europe, especially Scandinavia.

Some windows only provide a “tilt” opening, and some others only the side hinge option. Our tilt and turn windows look to give you the benefits of both types, without having to sacrifice one or the other. Rain or shine, you should be able to ventilate your home — just “tilt” for a rainy day, and turn for a scorching, hazy summer evening.
